Chlöe Bailey is arguably most well-known for being one-half of the Beyoncé-approved musical duo Chlöe x Halle. The sisters have been in the spotlight since their early days on YouTube covering popular songs, including “Pretty Hurts,” which got Queen B’s attention and earned them a deal with her label Parkwood Entertainment. Last summer, Chlöe embarked on her solo career, releasing her single “Have Mercy,” and now has an album on the way, so it was only right that she graced the cover of Allure‘s Melanin Edit issue.

Makeup artist Samuel Paul and hairstylist Larry Sims formed part of the dream team that readied Bailey for her cover photo shoot. In an interview after the fact, they revealed some key tricks and techniques that went into creating her golden makeup and intricate hairstyles, plus behind-the-scenes moments from the set.
Gold was central to the theme of this photo shoot, so the duo incorporated metallics and metal elements throughout her looks. Chlöe appears on Allure‘s June/July issue cover with her gorgeous brown locs fashioned into a mushroom hairstyle and a golden inner-eye accent, a trend that has been picking up speed since the end of 2021.
Chlöe is an exemplar of the versatility locs offer, so Sims wanted to ensure he created hairstyles she has never seen before. Sims looked to the ’70s, specifically “old-school, Black mushroom,” hairstyles, mentioning Tootie from Facts of Life as an example.
